Trevor,
I'm not sure I'd really put absolute faith in the battery's "eye"; what I would look for, however, is to find out how to open the cells so you can check the fluid level in the battery. The only batteries which are truly maintenance free are gas recycling batteries. These are produced by Bosch, which I know for sure, and perhaps by other manufacturers, also. I have owned two Bosch gas recycling batteries, and neither of them had a terribly long life. "Maintenance Free" usually means low maintenance - there should be either individuals screw caps for each cell, or two short panels on top of the battery, each covering three cells/holes. If you haven't been in there in 2 1/2 years, its about time to take a look. Don't forget - distilled water, only!
