Twenty years ago, I used to live on a boat in Deale, Md which is about an hour from D.C. and drove into the city via Rt 4 through PG county and then (Suitland?) Parkway into the city by the Navy Yard IIRC. The area outside of D.C. where I lived was glorious, kind of rolling farmland still. South was Solomon's Island area, fun for day trips, North was Annapolis, always fun. I was within an hour of D.C. and an hour of Baltimore. To be honest, I didn't go into the city much as I loved being removed from city life.
I have very fond memories of the D.C. area and would move back there in a heartbeat given the opportunity, although the cost of housing is probably pretty high in and around the city. If you will be pretty far out in the burbs, cost may be less.
BTW, I remember a lot of good Saabs in the salvage yards!!
