I'm going to guess that the 9k sold more copies total due to its being on the market here for over a decade. I'm sure somebody on list has the actual sales figures. However, I'm confident that the 9^5 has easily eclipsed the 9k's year-by-year sales numbers. Factoring for inflation, it's a much less expensive car with far more features. 9k sales had slowed to a trickle by the time they pulled it from the market, and it had become terribly expensive.
The 9kT is a fun car to own and drive. It also holds a cavernous amount of stuff if so needed. I had one for 13 years before getting a 9^5. Take your pick on the reason for the ignition location: it was necessary because of Saab's 9k design partners (Fiat, Lancia, Alfa) or it was an attempt to go mainstream with the car. I'm not sorry they went back to the console ignition.
