Bizarre Smell

Hey All --
I posted in General because this affects both my NG900 and my 9-5. Both give off an intermitent acrid burning plastic smell, coming from behind the engine. It's not sulphur from the cat, nor is it trans shaft seal leak smell.
It started with the NG, I figured it might be idlers, so I did them, to no avail. (They did need changing).
And now, tonight, the 9-5 started doing it, too. Its idlers are fine. Both on on-boost situations, the smell is getting sucked in through the climate control. But I cannot find anything stuck to the exhausts of either car. Both are currently parked in NYC, had have done the trip from NYC to Hartford many times. The only similarity they share at this point is me and the route I travel (and they're both green ;) )
I think it's spectacularly unlikely both cars have the same bizarre problem...has anyone heard of new de-icing chemicals or something in construction sites coating the exhausts? I simply don't remember driving thru anything the would obviously stick...
Thanks in advance
