Definitely agree... I spent 6mo studying abroad in Australia in the latter half of 2000. Best experience of my life, no question. While the experience is the important thing, not the money, Dan W brings up a good point about the relative cost. As a college student, you'll be poor in Europe, where cost of living is very high. In Australia, you'll be rich if you have American money, because of the exchange rate.
Australia and Europe are two extraordinarily different places. While either will give you a valuable experience, understand this difference well. Europe is old, brilliantly alive with history, and very city-centric in its way of life. Australia is new and vibrant, filled with beautiful natural scenery, and much less developed.
Depending on the time of year, I'd actually recommend somewhere other than Sydney. Look into the University of Queensland up in Brisbane. That's where I studied, and was glad I did it. You'll find that the Aussie culture varies a bit from north to south. If you're born & raised in new england, you'll probably feel more at home in NSW. Being a California boy, the Queensland coast was like heaven to me.
Please feel free to email me for further info on Oz. I traveled around quite a bit while I was there, have a number of good friends and contacts, and am always keen to talk about it. I'm also seriously considering relocating down under more permanently sometime in the near future.
Cheers,
'Roo
