you need to be using an oil with at least the properties against which the system is calibrated. In the case of the 9-3SS, that's Mobil 1.
The Saab implementation goes the ususal GM system one better by revealing the percentage "used up so far" of original oil life. This allows you to plan your maintenance interval...change a little early when it's convenient, or implement a given level of "conservatisim" = say, change oil at 90% or 75% of rated life.
With the usual GM implementation, the system is calibrated against conventional oil. You can insert your conservatism by using a better grade of oil, say for example, the Saab synthetic blend that you get free with your "scheduled maintenance" for which you substitute the full synthetic of your choice.
