Reliability versus safety. The Toyota trucks are tempting for reliability and low depreciation. They are not fuel efficient and they are not that safe. Toyota has been shown to design to testing and it's Rav4 is part of the reason for the IIHS passenger offset test after it was found that Toyota reinforced only the driver's side on the Rav4. There are also videos raising questions about Toyota's stability control including on the 19 Rav4. Safety being better across the board is far from best in class for the era. In comparison, some of the Volvo in house testing videos have the dummies barely impacting the airbags. Volvos costs more to buy, are also not that efficient, and are less reliable than Toyota. Mercedes is probably similar, even though MB oddly doesn't excel in testing. There really isn't much to buy at a reasonable price point these days without dealing with older car and reliability issues. And technology has made this more complicated as many recent cars have aged poorly as technology has marched on. Who wants most of the tech to be worthless and cumbersome to deal with.
