I bought a 1988 245DL a few months ago for my trip to Alaska.
Wow, what a car! I would never have thought I would like it so damn much! It is so much fun to drive! You can really feel the RWD and the steering is just perfect. The brakes are excellent in both bite and feel. It really feels like an oversized Miata :-)
I love all the thoughtful detail and the unmatched practicality. Really like the quality of interior finish and materials. Just about the only thing I can fault is the lack of any kind of cargo cover.
The parts are super-cheap, the sevice requirements are minimal. The car is a joy to work on, much like my SAABs -- only better. Everything is easily accessible and there is plenty of room under hood to work.
I like that the body is fully galvanized -- starting with 1985 model year. Rust is the biggest problem with my C900.
The 2.3l SOHC engine pulls like a locomotive. It may not be very fast but it is very easy to drive and the power is very useable. The gearbox shifts with precise feel, very similar to my C900.
