I am an owner of 1995 VW Golf 4-cyl with 244k happy miles on the odometer. It is the most reliable car I have ever own and requires minimum maintenance.
1996 VW Golf/Jetta have Bosch Motronic 5.9 fuel management. The diagnostic trouble codes can be checked in 3 ways.
1. VAG computer.
2. Any OBD2 scanner.
3. By inserting a special plug into the diagnostic connector and counting flashes on the check engine light. The plug is stowed under the rear seat. A Bentley manual helps in this procedure. See the link.
To erase the code (assuming it was caused by a TEMPORARY malfunction) just disconnect the battery for ~10-15 minutes.
