There are two version of the 4 litre I-6, there is the old version (pre-1993 IIRC) and the newer version which they call "High Output", the old one is a little weak but the new will knock your socks off.
In college I worked at a Jeep dealer and the only real problems I have heard about with their I-6 is leaky rear main seals. With the old version, the engine would have to be removed to replace it, with the new version that part of the engine could be taken apart in order to repace it. These are really 300k mile engines, that is to say they are quite durable and reliable.
Springbreak of my sophmore year of college we took a ski trip to Big Sky Montana. We were students at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, so we only had to go through North Dakota and Montana. We took two vehicles, a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder SE (V-6)and a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport (I-6). On that trip we drove most of the way at 90mph+ and I can tell you the Jeep liked that speed much better than the pathfinder did, it also used about one less tank of gas than the Nissan to get out there. Both vehicles were running 31"x10.5" tires, the jeep was a manual and the pathfinder was an auto.
