go up a notch and consider the E34 body series, made as 525, 535, 530 and 540 4 door sedans and wagons from 1989 to 1995. My recommendation is for the latest 525 2.5 liter 5-speed car you can afford. The 24 valve M50 engine (after 1992?) is bulletproof, the chassis is one of the best BMW made, IMHO. Dual airbags after '94 (93?) They made about 300,000 examples of all types and a decent, although not quite up to Saabnets standards, BB exists at Bimmernuts.com. Unless you are in rust-free zone the pre-E34 cars are getting a little old for my taste.
