Without looking up the specifications, I leave that up to you, I believe that this BMW requires not just synthetic oil, but synthetic oil of a certain specification. Not all synthetic oil meets all specifications.
Information should be available in the owner's manual or from the dealer or from various sources about what oils meet BMW requirements. From your report I consider it very likely that A) the oil has not been changed at appropriate intervals, and/or B) the correct grade of oil has not been used. Failure to comply with and document oil changes with correct oil may harm the engine and void warranty.
"Semi-synthetic" oil is probably not approved for this engine, but I am just guessing, check the manual.
The Check Engine light ("Service Engine Soon," or whatever, nomenclature varies) indicates an emission-related failure. It is not likely to come on for late oil change. It comes on for specific engine performance reasons that are monitored by the Engine Control Computer.
Lemon laws are not likely to apply unless you can prove correct maintenance. Sorry.
