A diesel operates most efficiently on the open road. Since diesels don’t have a throttle body they don’t suffer the pumping losses of a petrol engine, so they are at their best during part throttle cruising. City driving isn’t bad for them, and they should still get better mileage than petrol counterparts, but the increase won’t be as substantial and it will take longer to pay for the additional cost of the diesel engine.
I also believe that diesel engines take longer to warm up to peak operating temperature than petrol engines (this may have changed with technology, I’m not sure, but is the conventional wisdom). Again, in short errands this will cut down on efficiency, and I suppose could add to wear and tear.
So overall, in my opinion, a diesel won’t make a “bad” grocery getter, but such a role doesn’t necessarily play to the engine’s advantages. That’s really a situation where a hybrid shines.
