My moms 97 toyota corolla has an intermitant problem where the brake lights come on when the parking/head lights are turned on. This just as bad as not having breaklights at all. the reverse is also true, the parking lights will come on when the brake pedel is pushed.
This sounds like a ground fault. Various limitations obviate trying to educate you on what is a ground fault or how to locate and solve it, not trying to be snooty buy just to say that curing it yourself is probably over your head.
Camrys of that vintage have a pattern failure of wiring harness abrasion where the rear harness passes the left trunk hinge. I have not seen that on Corollas but they may be similarly designed. A worn-through wire in the harness in that location could cause problems like you describe.
Some dealers are very good and others not so good. An independent shop with a good history, like in business for many years, that specialises in electrical problems, might be able to sort things out for you better than an incompetent dealer.
Search the Shop Finder at iATN.net for shops near you.
Where should i begin to look, or should i just have her bring the car to the dealer.
