Thanks to everyone for replying. I know the 9-5 would be probably the best all around wagon we could get but she's not too keen on having "twin-er cars". We know they aren't true twins but none the less, my Spidey-senses told me to drop the Saab thing so I did. I think she just wants something different so I really can't argue with that.
The SUV thing is definitely out. As many of you mentioned, they rarely offer more space and the payoffs (easier to get the wiggle-worm in and out, etc) are only temporary. I will still look longingly at the Land Rovers though! Someday...someday...
Red900s: We briefly looked at the V70. Mind you this was the newer style (V70-R in fact – screaming deal on a brand new one ~$31k!) but the reliability of the R turned me off so I didn't really look at any others. The styling of the new-ish ones is not our favorite but the older style like yours is appealing. I'll keep an eye out for an older one.
Siegrisd: Thanks for the info, I've read some of your previous posts about your Passat so it's nice to hear from someone with first hand experience. Everything I've read leads me to believe I should steer away from the 4-cyl and opt for the 6. The 6 seems to be a bit more robust and I like the though of having a bit more power and a bit smother power delivery (I could be wrong thinking that though).
anthonySF: Thanks for the lead on the 5-series. Completely spaced it; I only had the 3-series on the radar for a bit. The 5 is definitely a possibility assuming it's in the price range and a good example can be found. A quick search online shows they are slightly pricier but might be something to consider. Thanks again!
Vvk: I'll watch for the tether mounts. I've seen some of them mounted on the back of the seats but we've looked at so many cars I can't remember which ones had this. I'll pay closer attention, especially to some of the "older cars". I have a feeling I'm in for a big surprise the first time we take a trim to Grandma's in regards to the amount of stuff we'll be packing. I'm going crazy with all the stuff in the house we've acquired even before the baby is here! Our basement project can't be finished soon enough.
Also, thanks to a lot of you mentioning that the A6 is slightly bigger (especially in the back seat). I was under the impression the Passat and A6 are the same but it sounds like it's the A4 that the Passat shares most of its components. The A6 or the 5-series may be, for the long haul, a better choice. Hmmm...
