I've looked at both while shopping for a new car for the wife. I think between the two it would just come down to personal preference. If you like the styling of the Mazda6, it will probably be a bit more reliable. In wagon form, I think the Passat looks better than the 6; I'm not a huge fan of the trendy styling of the 6. The hatchback version of the 6 is my personal favorite.

We have driven a few previous-gen Passats (GLX V6's) but haven't ever been really, really thrilled with the car in town. However, I feel the Passat would be a _much_ better freeway cruiser than the Mazda6, but the 6 would probably be a bit more fun to drive around town. I used to read how amazing the interiors were in the Passat but I just don't see it (maybe when they first came out they were well ahead of the competition but since then I think most have caught up).

The Mazda6 is quite a bargain in used form. The wagons especially just don't seem to hold their value. Like you, I saw several with very low miles selling quite cheaply. The Passat is probably a bit more robust and safer, but you'll likely pay more both in acquisition and operating costs.

If you read my post a little further down (I originally posted about the A6 vs the Passat), there are some good replies.

I also have to recommend the 2005-07 Legacy GT. After a lot of shopping (I have still yet to pull the trigger but that's another, long story) I found the Legacy GT to be one of the best wagons out there (second only to Saab of course!). Very fun to drive, reliable, safe and pretty cheap. Some drawbacks are fuel economy suffers due to the AWD, the frameless windows make for a bit of a noise ride, and they are _very_ common (if you consider the Outback the same car), but overall, it's a great little car.
