Larger tires, fender flares, stiffer suspension, higher compression, close ratio gearbox, sport seats, spoilers and stripes, this was the formula for the first econobox rocket, the legendary 1983 Rabbit/Golf GTI. Subsequently the A2 Golfs and Jetta's got the same treatment and 16V engines. The A3s sorta' lost some of that gusto though they did get the killer narrow angle V6. A4s and A5s get the wonderful 2.0T, though it's not as wonderful as a Saab 2.0T.
I 'spose a current R32 is sorta' as close to an M, S or AMG as VW is gonna' get.
