I too really like the X3 and came _this close_ to getting one. One major advantage in my eyes, is that they can be had with a manual transmission. The manual mated to either engine makes for a very nice vehicle.

My only reservation is the interior. It is covered in acres of very cheap, hard plastic. In fact, it really is out of place in the BMW lineup in terms of interior quality. Compared to the RDX, the BMW interior is downright embarrassing. The RDX obviously is filled with plastic as well but at least it was pleasant to look at and touch. Conversely, the leather (and even the vinyl) in the BMW has a much better, more durable look and feel to it. Like all Japanese cars, the RDX has some pretty thin leather that looks as though it won't hold up as well as the European competition.

You can't go wrong with either of them though if you are committed to a smaller SUV. Too bad Saab is a bit slow at getting a smaller, competitive SUV to market. The 9-4 looks appealing but it's about 5 years too late to the party.
