I've got a 97 850 Wagon Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 09:11:27 In Reply to: Going to buy a 97 Volvo 850 wagon, 2garfields, Wed, 19 Mar 2008 05:36:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It's a T5, but otherwise I think it's very similar to the one you're looking at. The most common fault on these 850s is the ABS computer. It seems that they nearly all fail at some point. It's not too big a deal since there's a guy out in California who makes a living repairing these - $125 + $15 shipping.
Check you're not leaking any oil since the rear main seal seems to be a fairly common failure point also, and that's an expensive fix. Ball joints don't seem to last all that long, but that might be the fault of the aftermarket replacements.
Timing belt must be replaced at 70k intervals - that's something I would try and find out for sure if it was done at $70k - if not you might want to budget for a replacement (which I think is around a $400 job at an indy).
I've had mine a year, it has $190,000 miles on it and it runs beautifully. Other than the ABS computer, I've just done normal stuff - brakes, one ball joint, rear shock mount - nothing too expensive.
