If I want an automatic, I will buy a Buick... wait, I did!
I just can't imagine a better car with automatic transmission. If someone wants an auto, they want comfort and isolation from driving experience. I now have a 2003 Buick LeSabre that is absolutely wonderful -- best auto tranny car I have ever driven. Sorry, no BMW, Mercedes, Audi, SAAB or Volvo comes close. I have owned manual transmission SAABs, Volvo, BMWs and have driven manual and auto versions of Audi and Mercedes. In my opinion, the automatic versions of all these European cars are vastly inferior to the manual version.
The Buick is very different. I must say that it is the one and only automatic car that I have ever LIKED driving. The automatic transmission and the 3800 V-6 work together so well that I just don't ever notice them, unlike in other automatic transmission cars. My daily drivers are 2003 and 2007 BMW 3-series (manual, of course). To each his own but when I get automatic BMW loaners at the dealer I can't wait to get back to my manual cars, even though I sometimes get very fancy/expensive loaners. They just suck with an automatic.
Not sure about diesel and auto combo. All European reviews I have ever read frown upon this combination, saying that diesel engine and automatic transmission are difficult to make work well together. And why bother if you can buy VW Golf and Jetta TDI equipped with manual?
