You are right, they are different vehicles + in general the Foresters most people are buying are cheaper than Saabs, but not as much as I'd expected. We're in Canada, so pricing may be different in the US, but here is what we found:
List price on a 9-3 sportcombi with AWD (no 9-3x here yet) is $40330, but discounted (right on the web site) by $8500 to $31830. Non AWD 9-3 sedans were selling for $27k last spring. A base model Forester costs $26k (PZEV is $28k), and go up with options, so they are cheaper, but not horrendously cheaper. Outback pricing starts at $29k. If you want a turbo in the Forester, it starts at $35295, significantly more than the Saab. Now the Forester prices are list, but what we found is there is essentially no discounting on Subarus here... They sell like hotcakes!
I'm the worst kind of customer because I'm really only interested in used vehicles. Comparing Saab + Subaru dealer lots this spring, we found that a base model 2006 Subaru Impreza (cloth seats etc) goes for the same price as a 2006 9-3 with the same mileage. For me, that's a no brainer! Conversely, one could argue for a new buyer, they will have more residual value when they sell if they buy a Subaru, but I'm not sure most purchasers really consider that. Most of our friends who are Subaru owners keep them until the wheels fall off.
Our friends who bought a Forester shopped it against Outback, and Rav4, and bought the Forester because they hated the Rav4 + found the Outback uncomfortable.
Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good things about the Subarus... just not sure there's enough to justify the evangelism, and imho, a good market for Saab to go after...
