I've got both - a 2004 Saab 9-3 and a 2004 Passat W8. In terms of reliability both have been about equal. Both had some issues early on but most have been resolved and they have been somewhat trouble free recently.
For me to buy another VW, I think it would have to be something like the TDI or GTI - in other words, one of the more "special" cars, not a base car. If you are looking for some basic transportation, you're probably better off getting something from Japan; it may be boring, but it will be reliable. I can forgive some of the reliability issues you'll have with the VW as long as it gives you something else in return such as ridiculously good gas mileage and resale value with the TDI, or a more dynamic driving characteristic in the GTI.
