I am always bemused on these boards when someone asserts that SAAB competes with BMW and MB. For one thing, "base" models of those brands have not been sold in the United States since the 1970s.
How anyone one who has crossed shopped and driven 9-3/3 Series or 9-5/5 Series can find them comparable in performance is beyond me. The SAABs are good all-around compromises at vastly lower prices, and that is exactly what I love about my 9-5 wagon. The ride and handling on my 9-5 does not compare in any favorable way with a 5 Series BMW, and the 9-3 is not much closer to a 3 Series. The Bimmers are poised and balanced. They go through the twistys with a grace and athleticism that SAABs lack. "Carving the corners" is a lot more fun than plowing through them. Front-rear weight balance and the lack of torque steer give them the edge. The disparity gets even wider if you compare Aeros to M models.
The 9-3/C Class comparison is a little more favorable, because the C Class is built to a price point. Comparing a 9-5 to an E Class Mercedes is a non-starter along the lines of comparing it to a 5 Series BMW, but more for reasons of luxury, features and the quality of interior design and materials than performance.
SAABs are sui generis . Enjoy them for what they are.
