We purchased a used 2009 Jetta TDI with the DSG transmission back in July. My wife normally drives it and she averages 42 to 44 MPG during her 20 mile one way commute in urban traffic here in Hampton Roads in Virginia. The one highway trip saw 47 MPG when we drove up to the mountains and back in the western part of the state. I enjoy driving the car, but do wish for a manual transmission. The DSG is ok in normal mode, good in sport mode, and the manual mode leaves me wanting. My 2003 9-5 Aero and my MINI Cooper S have manual transmissions, but we thought we would try the newer automatic since my wife is in traffic a lot. Reliability is good so far, as has VW support. The previous owner replaced a rear door latch. The forums discuss problems with the fuel pumps destroying themselves on a few of the cars which is attributed to the wrong fuel or poor quality fuel. I found an oil company that seems to have good quality diesel fuel with a cetane rating of 45, and I use a good quality additive to help prevent the problem based on the advice found on the TDI forums (e.g. TDIClub). In any case, this is our second TDI and we do enjoy the car. It is surprising how it is nimble (thank you Golf platform) and also comfortable and roomy.
