More on Jeep Liberty Transfer case leak Posted by CBS [Email] (#969) [Profile/Gallery] (more from CBS) on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:26:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So I made the time (kind of a joke considering how easy it is) to inspect the transfer case more closely. There was evidence of a slow leak either from the shaft input seal (from rear wheels) or the two halves of the case. The oil stain was on the lower third of the case toward the rear wheels. No evidence of leakage from the output shaft seal (going towards front wheels). I then took the fill plug out with a 10 mm hex wrench and felt around. The good news was that I could feel fluid on the gears; the bad news was my finger couldn't feel the fluid level. So I'm low. I also noticed the drain plug wasn't nearly as tight as the fill plug so I tightened that up...considering that could actually be the source of the seep. So now I have two questions.
Since the drain plug was not super tight this could be the source of the leak...so I want to fill it back up and monitor for further leaks. Is this a good idea, or do you'all think I should get it fixed ASAP ($300 at dealer for shaft seal)?
I heard a good choice for fluid was Castrol ATF-4 synthetic tranny fluid. Good choice? Will this mix with existing (I assume OEM) or should I do a complete flush (given that it would have to be flushed if the dealer fixes seal). Of course I would do a complete flush if it turns out that fluid was seeping out of the loose drain plug and by tightening that it was fixed.
Any comments welcome.
