DSG Gearboxes: how do they work out?

Seems like these new DSG dual-clutch 6 and up speed gearboxes
are all the rage now. I can see how they are more efficient and
everything, but how do they work out in real driving? First,
without a torque converter, the computer has got to manage clutch
slippage for takeoff. The Ford unit (and others perhaps) manage
this in situations like hill starts by applying the brakes. That
sounds like it would be a) tough to get right, and b) hard on brake
pads. Plus the torque converter cant, um, convert torque, i.e. let
the engine over-rev past wheel speed when you start out. Are they
slow off the mark (pretty important for a lot of people)? Finally,
those two clutch pads are deep down inside the transmission, so
they've got to be a bear to replace. Does wet-clutch vs dry-clutch
help with lifespan?
Not convinced, but I'm usually behind the times -- I'm still pretty
excited about finally getting a 5-speed automatic!
