I went with a set of Nokian WR all-seasons for my Subaru Legacy. It's rated for deep snow use in Europe. Not cheap though - in 185/70R14 they were $85 each, and to fit our 9-5 wagon they'd be $159 each! We're going to do winter tires on the Saab. I think the Dunlop Winter Sport M3's will be the one.
Here around Boston we usually get some snow and a decent amount of slush and ice. In 13 years of driving on all-seasons I have yet to have gotten stuck or had too much trouble, and that was in FWD Toyotas. Last year (the 1st with the Subaru) I had trouble on packed snow due to worn, low quality OEM tires. I don't anticipate that this year.
I suspect winter tires work great on the Saabs due to the strong torque. My old 90 Camry with its whopping 115 ft-lbs never really could break traction!
