Hello,
I have owned a BMW K75S for the last 4 years.. mine is a '92 model.. your '87 must be the same as '92.. they did not change at all I think.. great bike for the money.. its virtually bulletproof (assuming the owner took care of it!). They actually sell for more than the same year K100's.
I think gear whine is not much.. However with the standard windscreen on the K75S.. its very noisy.. I found it hard to ride without earplugs (I am 5' 10'').. also there's a lot of wind pressure on the neck and back with the standard windscreen.. earlier this year I switched to a taller windscreen from Aeroflow. Works perfect.. there is some wind noise but very acceptable. To really find out how smooth the engine is you have to duck behind the windscreen.. the engine is almost like a turbine..
It took me a while to get used to the engine's powerband.. but once you get used to it.. you can make swift progress.. if you are going to be riding mostly alone, you will be fine.. I think it lacks power for two-up riding..
Hope this was useful.. let me know if you have any other questions.. you can also e-mail me if you like..
Girish
