I don't think it's a matter of cheapness, I think it's a matter of mechanicals. I had the same problems with a DSG-equipped 135i as I did with the Fiesta - crappy creeping in traffic, stuttering part-throttle starts, and goofy hill behavior. Once moving, the DSG were fine in both. On twisty roads, the DSG was actually quite nice - but for sheepling along in traffic, not so much.
In the case of the Fiesta, the DSG adds cost versus an automatic, but adds fuel economy too. I'm sure Ford went with it to boost the EPA numbers rather than save money.
