Since Saturns are sold alongside Saabs in Canada (at long last in separate showrooms), Canadian Saab owners get to see and drive Saturns (as loaners) more than the average driver. In a way, Saab and Saturn face a similar challenge because their product lines are somewhat limited. On the bright side, both are getting new models to improve their respective situation. Along those lines, Saturn finally gets an official family hauler, the Relay, Saturn’s version of GM's new offerings in the field. Although GM has decided to redefine what they call these vehicles—which is real marketing baloney—they are nothing else but good old mini-vans. One doesn't need to be an adept of this type of vehicle to recognize it's imminent family virtues. The Relay is certainly as good (or bad) as Chevrolet, Pontiac and Buick versions of these revised vehicles, but did you see the grim face they put on the Saturn? You would think GM would learn from their not so distant mistakes. The fascia of the recent Saturn Ion on which the very survival of the brand lies, had to be restyled after two years because of pummelling sales. A distant cousin of the 9-5, the Saturn L, was not a bad car for the money, but it flopped so badly because of the bland styling, it was discontinued before it's replacement arrives. The front end of the Saturn Vue, which has recognized virtues, looks like it was borrowed from a kit car. When will they fire designers at Saturn and hire somebody who can give this struggling brand a distinct identity. Just a little rant showing how sometimes it seems GM has too much on its plate to look after all its offspring at the same time.
