I have a friend who went from VW to Subaru (impreza), to older BMW, to Audi A4, to BMW (X5), to Subaru (Outback)... Most of these were off lease (the older BMW being the exception). Maybe some people just like to switch it up a little, but I think there really is a void in there between the practical-but-still-Asian Subarus and the excessively complex German "ultimate driving machines". BMW's used to be pretty simple, but they have gone down a road full of technology that improves the cars except from a repair/long term ownership perspective...
Imho, what my friend really needs (needed actually - only fanatics would stick with the brand now) is some time in a SAAB. Imho, SAAB really filled that void well, at least before GM got too involved... I hope that at some point, we will see a manufacturer do a bit of an about face on this and make a better built car, but with a market based on leases, I doubt it will happen any time soon! In this market, "features" are king. Unfortunately, in most cases, "features" break.
