a 2005 9-5 for $6000. In fact, quite a nice one. Check the TSN classifieds.
I don't know a lot about the volvo reliability, but by 2004, the 9-5 was a solid car, with some things that can go wrong, but if you do your research and go in as an informed buyer, they are not necessarily expensive to own. We paid about that 3 years ago for a 2004, and it has been relatively problem free and fairly cheap to own.
Asian cars are generally pretty easy to own but it does not mean they are trouble free or always cheap to repair... and you're stuck driving a boring appliance. But they do fill a niche well and might work in your situation. Around here, similar age/miles Honda Civics sell for as much or more than a 9-5, so for me, it is a no-brainer.
A volvo s40 is probably not bad though if it is well maintained. Look for a good owner-maintained car at this price range. Records are a huge plus!
