We still have this thing here in North America that we "need" to be in a big vehicle with higher seating position - women in particular like this. And with so many of those vehicles on the road, there is some merit to it. I followed a Mazdasport CX7 turbo (compact SUV) for a while yesterday and it really did not look that tall. Only slightly more than a car... but then again, being a "sport" it was lowered, and therefore negates much of what makes an SUV useful (ground clearance). There is no free lunch!
I agree, wagons are all I need. Lower to the ground does improve vehicle dynamics all else being equal. The thing is, the SUVs have had a lot of development $$ put into them to make them closer to what wagons always did performance-wise. Wagons less so. So the gap has narrowed. Eg Tim claims he bought the Acura MDX SH-AWD vs the BMW (car) in significant part for performance reasons. That's pretty incredible.
