I finally got around to installing a boost gauge in my 1987 900s 16 valve LPT. I installed an autometer phantom with a 30hg vac to 20psi boost sweep.
So far I have a 2.5 inch cat back exhaust on the car with a 3 inch magnaflow muffler, open air filter, 88+ turbo pipes, 3 bar fpr (stock on the 900s), turbo injectors, MBC should arrive tomorrow, and i also have some stuff painted red; I hear that's good for 10hp or so ;-)
i'm boosting 5 psi max when I REALLY dig into it.
Would I be safe running 9-10 max psi? Last time I changed the plugs they were very black showing rich symptoms. Also, I am getting an occasional backfire on deceleration. I checked the exhaust system, and I have no leaks at all, which further leads me to believe that I am running rich. I have never had an air fuel gauge on the car, but i'm sure that needs to be my next big purchase along with a wideband o2. It just seems like the air/fuel ratio would not be much of a problem. Also, a headgasket job was performed on the car when the LPT was done back in March, so I'm not too concerned with the aspect of the higher compression blowing the headgasket.
Just looking for some opinions on this.... any input in appreciated!
Another question I have is that I can hear the turbo spooling when the gauge is still reading 2-0hg in vac. Does the turbo spool enough before it actually compresses air and makes boost to make itself vocal enough for me to hear it? I just want to make sure that my gauge isn't giving me the wrong reading.
