A good and large air fliter on a carbed engine can make more power than with no filter, as the filter smooths airflow across the carb venturies. Various other gadgets like velocity stacks also get you a few horsepower from the same principle. Now, I suspect a mass air meter and especially a MAP senser are a lot less sensitive to smooth flow than carb venturies. The turbo obviously plays a role too. Interesting topic, but I believe the consensus is that these devices are junk on a modern fuel injected engine.
