I was wondering if it was worth it to have winter tires recently (I already have a set - Goodyear UltraGrip GW3) wondering if I could get away with an "all season tire" as I was mounting my "winter" wheels on my Viggen yesterday. Yesterday afternoon I drove up to go skiing at Keystone...towards Loveland Pass (and through Eisenhower Tunnel) the roads were a little snow covered....I didn't slow down. I did some skiing, and my friends and I were going to Frisco to get a hotel for the night (more snow expected over night) and we took the back way....my friend in his Saturn with new all-season tires had difficulty staying in control. Another friend in his 9-5 with worn snow tires had no issues, I had no issues. My friend with the Saturn commented after we checked into the hotel how he was worried that he wouldn't be able to make it...and that the two Saab's just tore up the hills and around the turns with no issues. The scene replayed itself out today as we woke up and drove to Breckenridge to go ski (5 inches of fresh powder).....the two Saabs having no issues, and the Saturn getting along very, very slowly. After skiing (as it snowed all day long) I ended up following the Saturn back to Denver....and watched as he had traction issues going up to Eisenhower tunnel.

In a nutshell, snow tires are worth it...my girlfriend always makes fun of me for putting them on her Saab...but when it snows heavily she has no issues getting around (our road isn't plowed). Even if you buy the cheapest snows (I once bought some for $28 a wheel) they are better then your all-seasons.... I lived in Milwuakee....I couldn't imagine going through the heavy, wet snow with out snow tires....
