Here's my thought on these high HP factory sedans.... Posted by Matt D [Email] (#1854) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Matt D) on Wed, 30 Nov 2005 15:27:40 In Reply to: Re: 265 hp maxima, dboone, Tue, 29 Nov 2005 23:00:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
These days in adds you hear most every other car is 265, 280... even 300 hp; And although many cars from china/japan are being quoted at having huge amounts of power from the factory, there are a few things everyone should keep in mind. First of all these cars (like the maxima, sentra, camry, accord, etc...) were tested by a magazine ( i beleive car and driver ) when these numbers were first appearing, because they were obviously somewhat surprising, i mean almost 300 hp in not one but several production sedans? I beleive the maxima originally clamied 280 or so hp, and it was tested to be significantly lower than originally stated. So many manufacturers were forced to reprint their specs and hp numbers in light of the evidence brought to attention. So we know that they boasted their hp numbers okay, also... these cars have been pushed to the limits for OEM specs. Meaning since they wanted to get the most power out of them, they are all tuned and designed to be near the limits of power for what you've bought, other than opening filter / exhaust, the car's have probably had the most power pulled out of the engines that the manufacturer could muster in order to appeal to the HP crazed market that we seem to have fallen into. I mean it can be a little disturbing to hear that an NA sedan has 40 more hp than our turbo "sleds"...but what you have to remember is that when you take a 9000, it has SO much potential from the factory setup. They were tuned at a relatively low boost (compared to what the car/ turbo/ engine can handle)... and designed to get the most balance of fuel economy, safetly, power, and at the same time practicallity out of a sedan possible. When the car was released we didnt have the huge HP hungry market that we seem to now, and people wanted a car that was fast, but practical and easy to drive at the same time; which is why saab compromised and presented the 9000 and aero in the manner they did, to appeal to that wide market and not narrow it down simply to the people who wanted a performance monster. This is easy to understand since saab has always been such a low production manufacturer, so they would want a car that was the balanced and appealed to many buyers. Now that the 9000 is no longer a production car, but a rarity that can be tuned and tinkered with, we've discovered just how MUCH potential these cars have. If saab (or other manufacturers) had been in mindset that many 9000 buyer/tuners are, perhaps these cars would have had different ads back in 94-98.... i mean look at the 9-5, its still not a match for the 9000's engine for various reasons, but the new one is being released as a 260 hp 4 cylindar standard, with the 280 hp "overboost", and this is still not a "performance driven" vehicle design, its a very well performing vehicle that keeps practicality and safety close at hand because thats how saab wants it to be... just my two cents.
