that nub of metal was a deflector/protector for an additional sensor in some markets that was mounted there. I have ground mine off/down in my 1988 900 Aero and hard to tell but I think it does help smooth the exhaust flow and make the turbo respond a little peppier- maybe the placebo effect perhaps but I would say it is still worth doing!
