the time. My freshmen class was the first class required by the school to own a scientific calculator - it was also the first year they were affordable! My $200 Unicom 202SR probably correlates to spending nearly $2,000 on a laptop today, with much less functionality.
A lot of students would write all 8 digits from their calculator display onto the quizzes and exams thinking it gave them extra precision. Since the Profs were using test questions written during the slide rule era, most numerical values were limited to 3 digits.
Automatic loss of points for including more digits than the Prof could read on his slide rule.
