I'm now running 16x7.5 Ronal (ACT) LVs on my '92 9000T with 225/50-16 Goodyear GS-D3s. It's a really happy combination - grip, ride, steering weighting are all sweet - went with the LVs over some of the other styles 'cause they're ~4lb lighter per wheel. You couldn't pay me to run 17 or 18in wheels on that car - there's no performance benefit and a significant ride-quality tradeoff - but some folks are into the lower-profile looks so to each their own.
The fronts are ET35 and with the 225/50 tire there is about .25in sidewall to strut clearance. Whether a 225/45-17 (which is, I think, what you'd want in a 17in, not a 225/40) on a 17x8 ET35 would clear the strut depends on the section width of the specific tire make and type chosen.
A 27mm offset with a 225mm nominal section width tire might (probably will) work on the '93-later front fenders with their larger flare.
On the earlier fenders like mine a 225mm tire with ET27 offset *will* rub. Ronal shipped the wheels with 8mm spacers in them to get the offset out to 27mm - with that setup I'm running -1.5deg camber, have the fender-trim studs cut back to the nuts, and would still get contact once or twice a day. Got them to send some centering rings instead and the 35mm offset works perfectly.
In back you have to have 27mm offset. Anything more and you're rubbing the tire sidewalls on the suspension links - the wheel won't even bolt up.
A rear wheel wider than the front is a kinda senseless idea. Some of the VW guys do it (7.5in front, 9in rear) but they also run enough rear roll stiffness to pick the inside rear wheel completely off the ground in corners.
GM's now running bigger wheels on the front than on the rear of some of their hotter FWD hardware (255/40-17 front tires vs 225/50-17 rears, IIRC) which makes somewhat more sense dynamically if not aesthetically. Who knows, might get trendy.
