Their 30-weight oils are closer to a real 20-weight, their 0W-40 is really an 0W-30 (which is how it's rated by Audi, BMW, etc.)
Go check out the forums at bobistheoilguy.com for hardcore details.
Note that there's now two lines of Mobil 1, the 'new car' stuff that's SM-rated and the 'long life' stuff that's SL-rated (and more expensive.)
Extreme-pressure additives (like ZDDP) in oils are good for sliding friction surfaces (like our cam lobes) but poisonous to catalysts even in very small quantities, the EPA wants cats warrantied for friggin' ever, so some automakers are pushing for reductions in EP additives hence the SM spec.
If you want lots of EP additive run a diesel synthetic - Shell Rotella T Synthetic or Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40.
