I did a couple of 1/4 mile runs in my car on a local drag strip and found it to be boring and pointless. You get your few seconds on the track, and they waste the next 30 minutes sitting in line waiting for the next turn.
Driving schools are another matter. They are more fun, and they let you develop skills that you can use in everyday driving. I try to participate in at least a couple full-day events a year, and even managed to get my wife interested in attending.
There's also an important bit of a difference about driving school vs autocross, quartermile, lapping and other similar racing activities. Driving schools are the ONLY type of events where your regular car insurance remains in effect, and the warranty does not suffer (some manufacturers are known to decline warranty claims if the car is found to be used in racing activities, even if those are legal).
Our local club (Saab Club of Canada, based in Ontario) has been running very successful driving schools for many years, even though the majority of cars on these events weren't Saabs ;].
I recently learnt about the possibility of having a driving school at SOC07, and it sounds very exciting. With the event being held so close to the Canadian border, many Ontario owners are planning to attend the convention, and I wonder if we can get some of our instructors and drivers interested in participating in the school.
