Steve,

Cousin? Maybe. It's a small world, in more ways than one. You mentioned SW Colorado. I lived in Pagosa Springs for a few years, back in the mid-80s. Paradise, except for the grinding poverty. At the time, I didn't think I had any family within 750 miles. Mine traces back to south-east Texas in the late 1800s (with a couple of branches that ended up in So. Cal.), and before that to Georgia in the late 1700s. Where's your branch from?

On the automotive front: I have been tempted a long time by the idea of a 97 9000 Aero. But now they're getting old, too, and one of the lessons I am mulling over from the 900 is that my attachment to cars probably outlasts the cars themselves. I waited too long to hotrod the SPG and my next plan is not to wait a day longer than the warranty -- if that long.

As to the Allroad: I was intrigued by the 2.7T Allroad until I read a review about the detrimental effects of excessive suspension travel on performance handling and suspension design. The very factors that make it interesting in the occasional back road rumble seem to make it mushy in the majority of driving applications, and downright sloppy near the edge of the handling envelope. My current thinking is this: if I really want SUV capability, I should look at SUVs and light trucks; if I want performance car handling, I shouldn't try to get a sports car crossed with an SUV.

As to the pooch: part of the problem is finding a rear end big enough to accomodate a car carrier, so he isn't crushed by luggage and he isn't on the upholstery. If he wants a comfy ride, he can go inside my wife's minivan. But he stays on the carpet: No dogs on the seats, in the house or in the car.

Cheers,

Jim Watts
