I agree with what turbocon86 said about the laser detector. If the laser goes off then you've allready been tagged.
Theroretically, if there are other cars on the road then the radar detector with pick up scatered signals from the cops tagging other cars. But, if you're the only car on the road and a cop is hidding, he'll see you coming, turn on the radar gun and zap, he's got you just as you're radar detector warns you. It happened to me, but only once in 4 years of driving with one. Luckily, I only got a warning for speeding.
HOWEVER, my logic may be flawed, but, chances are if a cop is hidding in his spot he'd probably have his gun on all the time, so the detector would pick up an ambient signal from quite a distance. Mine is an Eclipse, Rocky Mountain model (I think...it's not right in front of me lol).It has saved my butt dozens of times, and starts to scream with, sometimes, a few kilometers notice. Yes, I said kilometers.
I don't claim to be an expert on the topic, so if anyone wants to play Devil's Advocate then please do so.
