i think the point to be gotten from this is that while a K&N may come with a cool sticker, it's not gonna all of a sudden allow your car (at least a well designed one) make mad mad power and blow off helicopters and veyrons.
if the filter isn't the bottleneck, it's not gonna make a big difference.
with Vigge's setup, the filter isn't the bottleneck. rarely is a paper filter a major restriction.
i can see some of the more mundane family-oriented cars having an intake system tuned more for quiet than airflow, binning all that and putting on a (well designed) cold air intake system could make a significant difference.
but that is not the case here. the only way buying a K&N will make a car like Vigge's faster is if he drove to the store with a trunk full of pennies and used them to buy it. even then, the placebo effect looms large (and convincing)
there's plenty of reviews of cloth/oil filters. from what i have read, just buy a paper filter every year or two and look elsewhere for miraculous gains. like LED windshield squirters. the blue ones are the fastest, proven to gain 45-60 HP!
