Drew,
I thought one of the big deal things was that Trionic WAS significantly different from your 'average' Honda, Scooby, etc. ECU? Ion sensing, detonation sensing, coil-on-plug control (Acura does that, but it is RECENT).
And Saabfan, a more specific question that I will pretend you asked, is,
"Can I mod my own ECU, and maintain all of the unique things that Tionic does, without changing too much electronics and hardware in the process?"
In that case, the answeres above all stand, and still apply to this, but there are a number of things you could do to add a standalone system at less than, comparable, and much more expensive cost to purchasing a staged or tuned Trionic system. It would involve lots of research, possibly new sensors, wiring, and motivation, similar to what Drew has done taking Trionic apart and putting it back together (my favorite approach).
There are lots of alternatives, and I am interested in how many people here have attempted standalone installs on prior Trionic cars? I know of a few....
Megasquirting a C900 is one thing, but putting a Motronic or PE, or Nira system on a Trionic car are really different, and is there enough benefit for anyone to be interested?
Best,
Drew
