Can a 2000 base 9-3 really be pumped up to perform? (Long)

I am not a big fan of the 9-3. Don't get me wrong, I like the car, but not for $26K. However, in my area the dealer can not sell 5spd cars. At my local dealer there is a base 9-3 5 door, 5spd, that the salesman, after cajoling and ribbing him about never being able to sell it, and after making statements(with my fingers crossed behind my back)such as "I like the VW GTI better" and "If I were going to buy a new car, I'd want more car than the 9-3 can give me for $26k", said he would sell it to me for $19,500 after incentives and Saab owner loyalty, etc. Thats a price worth paying.
My question: can a base 9-3 be modified as easily as my 88 900t? Can it be made to fly and handle better? Viggen springs, etc?
Thanks
TM
