Personally I don't care for engines where the number of cylinders don't divide by 4. Although I have been told that an inline 6 is tops for smoothness. V8's typically have something most fours don't, copious amounts of readily available torque. You can "lug" a V8. you don't have to shift it much in traffic. It is well suited to a slushbox.
While the rest of the world was taxing fuel heavily, the states wasn't. We could build big heavy cars. Big heavy cars took torque to move off the line quickly. V8's did that. They towed boats and trailers well. I don't think I would try towing anything with my SAABs.By the 70's, we built V8's cheaper than any European could build a four. It's more a matter of where you get your kicks, a big displacement V8 that loafs, or a small turbo 4 that screams (but still kicks butt).
Please understand, I haven't owned a V8 in a couple of cars, and I own 2 SAABs, both with turbo 4's. For me, there is a bit more of a thrill in having the small engine produce power that only v8's (in the US) used to produce. But when it comes to exhaust note, there's nothing like the burble of a v8.
just MHO,
hr
