Never been a big fan of the KYBs, and finally someone explained the issue to me. Dunno if he's right, but it seems plausible... Anyway, KYB uses a two-tube design, and as they "work" they tend to aerate, which leads to spongy performance. What that means is that the first time they take a big bump, they will feel firm (if not hard) but after that they will get softer. This is certainly consistent with my experience - they are harsh over speedbumps and potholes, etc., but get really soft during hard cornering and spirited driving. It's the worst of both worlds! :) They rattle your teeth over the oddball humps & bumps, but when you really need them they go limp. Neato!
If you need a cheap shock, get a KYB, but don't expect a nice ride or nice performance, 'cause they won't get you there.
