The top of the shocks are attached to the body with rubber mounts that dampen out some road shock and noise. These mounts can also absorb bending motion. The angle of a front strut can change as the wheel moves up and down.
In a front strut, the spring loads are transmitted to the body through the thrust bearings. When the bearings fail and the wheel is turned this will wind up the spring until the force is high enough to overcome the resistance force in the defective bearing. This can create a characteristic noise and vibration when the spring suddenly unwinds. The forces generated by the dampers is transmitted through the upper mount and that force does not pass through the thrust bearings. When the wheel is turned, the damper's shaft rotates in the damper body.
With the NG900, the strut travel was limited and in corners one could be riding the bump stops. That affected ride quality. The small amount of strut travel imposed very high shock loads on the tires, bearings and wheels with things like pot holes. This arrangement bent thousands of wheels. Some cut off part of the bump stops to increase dampened travel.
